The beautiful seaside community of Point Loma is situated on a hilly peninsula within the city limits of San Diego, California. The area has a western and southern border that is made up by the Pacific Ocean. To the north is the San Diego River, and to the east are Old Town and the San Diego Bay. “Point Loma” is the terminology used to describe both the peninsula as a whole and the neighborhood itself. The area is frequently referred to as the place “where California began” because it was the landing point at which the first European explorers to the area arrived. Today, this rich-in-history region is also synonymous with beautiful residential and commercial architecture, rich culture, great events, spectacular natural views, and a wonderfully relaxing coastal atmosphere. Nature and science lovers will appreciate the picturesque Sunset Cliffs that contain dinosaur fossils and others from the late Cretaceous period. This is one of only a handful of know locations in California with such fossils. Yet, perhaps the best-known landmark here is the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. This structure is on the National Register of Historic Places and was first lit on November 15th, 1855. Further, it is deeply associated with San Diego and the Point Loma area. Point Loma has many distinct neighborhoods. Most areas consist of single-family homes, while the shopping and commercial district is found at Point Loma Village. This locale is also popular with sport fishing and yachting enthusiasts. Visually, Point Loma Village is masterfully laid out and lined with hundreds of jacaranda trees due to a conscientious community beautification effort. There is also a newer retail area that has some residential and educational elements located at Liberty Station – where the old Naval Training Center was located. Economically, Point Loma is most deeply focused on retail, military facilities, and marine recreation. What’s more, the annual events that take place in Point Loma are wide-ranging and very popular, including: The Day at the Docks Festival
When: April What: Celebrates sport fishing in the area. Festa do Espirito Santo When: May What: San Diego’s oldest ethnic and religious tradition rooted in the Portuguese community. The Cabrillo Festival When: October What: A celebration of the landing of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in Point Loma in 1542. St. Nicholas Home Tour When: First Saturday of December What: Usually 4 to 6 significant homes are heavily decorated for the holiday season and there is tea, treats, and caroling. Additional Holiday Season Overview Many blocks of Garrison Street close to Chatsworth are very well-known for elaborate decorations. Various Musical and Comedic Shows When: June through September What: Nationally known acts perform at the venue on Shelter Island. Additionally, there is a free outdoor concert series with area musicians on five Fridays in a designated local park every summer.
