Picturesque Talmadge Park

Just east of Kensington one can find the storied and picturesque neighborhood of Talmadge Park. Started as a development by the famous Talmadge sisters who starred in silent films in the 1920’s – the community is filled with many charming homes of various architectural styling. The three sisters – Norma, Natalie, and Constance - raised money with their husbands to develop the area in 1927. Today the area has a population of about 9,500 with homes that line the quiet, winding streets. Architecturally, most homes are Cape Cod, bungalow, and Spanish Revival in style. Although the area is unincorporated, the proximity to Kensington, Balboa Park, Downtown San Diego, and Mission Valley means that there are plenty of conveniences within a short distance. Those living here can find anything they need to purchase in Kensington along El Cajon Boulevard. Head east and you will be near San Diego State University and all of its fantastic restaurants and fun-filled nightclubs. Notably, Talmadge is denoted by 8, wrought iron, masterfully crafted gates that are found at the boundary of the original Talmadge Park housing development. The gates are about 10-feet wide and stand up to 15-feet in height. Beautiful, decorative light fixtures also adorn the gates. After a fundraiser by locals in 1998, the gates were restored to their original grandeur and shortly thereafter, in 2000; the City of San Diego declared the Talmadge Gates historic landmarks.
