University Heights is a great neighborhood in Central San Diego that is filled with many housing options like apartments, condominiums, cottages, and million-dollar homes. There is also plenty to do around here as there are many coffee shops, boutiques, restaurants, artist studios, and places with live entertainment. The area is denoted by a neon University Heights sign that spans across Park Boulevard. This part of San Diego is gay-friendly, like Hillcrest, but has a more laid back atmosphere. Trolley Barn Park is a great neighborhood playground for families to enjoy that also hosts live music on Friday summer evenings, while The Diversionary Theatre entertains with local, on-stage productions. Other highlights include things like imported food markets, book stores, antique stores, a rug merchant, flower shop, clothing stores, woodworkers, gallery framing, custom furniture makers, and an active arts scene. Further, as the area is rich in history, Shirley Ann Place - located between Madison Avenue and Monroe Avenue - is a designated historic district due to its beautiful 1920's Spanish Colonial Revival bungalows.
